Slo Bytes
SLO Bytes was founded in January, 1984 by a group
of businessmen in San Luis Obispo. Their first meeting was at Computerland, their first
group purchase of these new computers was 8088's for over $2,000 each. They quickly
outgrew Computerland and moved to the vending machine snack bar at Camp San Luis. This was
arranged by Byron Smith, national guardsman, who still lives in the area..

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY
GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY INC.
In 1542 two small ships sailed the California
coast under the command of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and the flag of Spain. Later, well
known explorers in California were Sir Francis Drake in 1579 and Sebastian Vizcaino in
1603. Much later, in 1769, Spain sent sea and land expeditions to occupy California for
Spain. Don Gaspar de Portola, leader of the land party, entered what is now San Luis
Obispo County on September 2, 1769.

San Simeon Chamber of Commerce
It isn't accurate to say that San Simeon would not
exist if it were not for William Randolph Hearst. It is close however. Perhaps the most
famous piece of Hearst real estate is La Cuesta Encantada, better known as Hearst
Castle. After the death of William Randolph Hearst in 1951, it was deeded to the
State of California and is now a leading tourist attraction. Mr. Hearst's fortune came
from the publishing industry and with it he embarked upon a mission to create a US castle
that would rival those found in Europe.

Nipomo
This photo has been seen around the world, and is
percieved by many as the epitome of despair born of the Great Depression. The story behind
this photo has allways been that Dorothea Lange driving on HWY101 through Nipomo came upon
an encampment of migrant farm workers busy at work on the pea harvest, she saw this woman
full of despair with several hungry urchins dressed in rags sitting before a threadbare
tent. Moved with compassion she took this photo of the stern strong face beaten down by
poverty, overwork and worry... surrounded by her young hungry children who hid behind her
for fear of the stranger with the camera.
